Thomas Eakins, Portrait of Dr. Samuel D. Gross (The Gross Clinic), 1875
We’d like to take a moment and welcome the Philadelphia Museum of Art as an official venue for Slow Art Day 2013! The above piece by Thomas Eakins is one of the artist’s most famous; we chose this artist to highlight in the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s collection not only because he was a very important figure in the Philadelphia art scene, but also because he worked slowly! Eakins would often create a multitude of sketches, drawings, and even 3D clay or wax models for his paintings, making sure every detail was perfect before finally beginning to paint.
Again, welcome to the Philadelphia Museum! If you’re not already, be sure to check out their tumblr. Everyone here at Slow Art Day is excited to have you on board!
